to illustrators
This mailing list is for discussion of illustration, including media,
techniques, marketing and self-promotion, and other topics relating to
the art and business of illustration. It is a place for illustrators and
wanna-be illustrators to discuss all aspects of illustration. We can debate
the merits of Norman Rockwell's work, discuss the latest water-soluble
oil painting techniques, or compare notes on which markets are buying what
kinds of work. The range of topics can be extremely broad.
Colored Pencil list
We've also started a list for colored pencil artists to discuss anything
related to that medium. You can subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to
colored-pencils-subscribe@onelist.com,
or simply click on the button below.

not-illustration list
We've also started a list for general discussion not specifically related
to illustration. You may ask: "If it's not related to illustration, why
is it mentioned here?" The answer is that in the past, we've discovered
that lots of digressions, debates, and off-topic discussions arise on the
illustrators list. Now we have an "official" place to direct these.

The Rules
Following a few simple guidelines will help keep the list interesting and
useful for all:
-
Remember that your posts will be read by many people, some of whom have
to pay for mail messages. Think about what you want to say, and say it
as clearly and concisely as you can.
-
don't post graphics files or images to the list. These files tend
to be very large, and can cause major problems on some systems. Instead,
either post a pointer to a Web or FTP site for your images, or ask who's
interested and e-mail directly to those who respond.
-
Reread rule 2!
To send mail to the list, simply address your message to illustrators@onelist.com.
Note that only list subscribers will be able to send mail to the list.
Subscribing and Unsubscribing
Slantville
We've formed an on-line artist's cooperative, ultimately to provide a forum
for ourselves, and a low-cost way to doing on-line marketing to art directors
and other art buyers. Dubbed Slantville, for the somewhat oblique perspectives
of its inhabitants, this site is just getting started, but promises to
become a true on-line community. See what's happening at http://www.kellycheek.com/Slantville
Mugshots
LEs Clark has been maintaining a collage of photos of list members. (Not
mandatory, but good fun!) See http://www.pfdstudio.com/slantville.html
for the latest, and contact LEs (laclark@oneimage.com)
about adding your photo.
Samples
Collections of some of our members' work are on display at the following
sites:
Illustrator's Directory
The list service allows us to keep a page of links to our own and other
relevant Web sites. Just visit http://www.egroups.com/links/illustrators
to add your name and link to the list.
Children's Writers List
There's also an e-mail list for children's writers. For more information,
see http://www.pfdstudio.com/cw-info.html.
Common Problems
Bounced messages: non-member submission
Only subscribers to illustrators are allowed to post to the list.
This radically reduces the amount of spam and noise that we're subjected
to. However, it means that all your postings must come from the same
e-mail address with which you subscribed. This is more of a problem
than it appears. Some people have more than one e-mail account, and
want to post from either one. In other cases, your Internet service
provider (ISP) may cause different "From:" addresses to appear in your
outgoing mail at different times. If this is a persistent problem,
contact your ISP about how to make sure your outgoing mail address is consistent.
Most modern e-mail programs allow you to set the "From:" address in some
way.
Removal from list
In some instances, subscribers are removed from the mailing list.
Typically, this happens if their e-mail addresses start bouncing messages.
If messages bounce because the address is "unknown" at the destination
site, the subscriber may be removed immediately. If the bounce is
due to a "mailbox full" condition, the address is generally removed from
the list after a few days.
In any case, if you're not getting messages, and you think you should
be, contact the list owner(s) at illustrators-owner@onelist.com
Enjoy!
